This week was basically a masterclass in why picking heavy favorites works. We backtested five different "favorite-focused" strategies across Kalshi's markets, and all five were profitable. But here's the kicker: three of them hit win rates north of 96%. That's not luck—that's the math of betting on outcomes the market already thinks are very likely to happen.
The star performer was Strategy #1 (weather favorites 88-92¢, ≤6 hours), which crushed it with a 24.14% return on $100, a 96.6% win rate, and zero drawdown across 89 trades. That's the kind of consistency that makes traders' eyes water.
The Speed Play Works Best: Strategy #1 took the gold medal by focusing on super-short timeframes (≤6 hours). With only 89 trades, it posted the highest absolute return ($24.14). The lesson here is simple: when you're betting on something the market already thinks is 88–92% likely, the faster you can close the position, the less time volatility has to bite you.
The Volume Play Pays, But Slower: Strategy #2 extended the window to 48 hours and quadrupled the number of trades (245 total), but the return dropped to just $5.03. More opportunities, but each one was smaller. It's the classic tradeoff: consistency vs. magnitude.
The Sweet Spot Might Be The Middle: Strategy #3 (92–96¢ range, ≤24h) and Strategy #4 (90–95¢, ≤48h) both captured solid returns ($7.31 and $14.70) with win rates above 96%. Strategy #4, in particular, managed a 96% win rate across 248 trades while returning $14.70—that's scaling without sacrificing reliability.
Strategy #5 split the difference with a 24-hour window, posting $10.48 on 243 trades. Solid middle-of-the-road stuff.
The week of July 6–13 was dominated by weather prediction markets (notice they all fall under "weather" category, even though the categories listed include sports, crypto, financials, politics, etc.). This suggests either the weather markets had a LOT of volume and liquidity, or they were pricing outcomes with exceptional accuracy. Either way, the heavy favorites simply won.
The zero drawdown across all strategies is also worth noting. In a normal backtest universe, you'd expect at least a tiny hiccup—a day or a trade where things go sideways. The fact that didn't happen suggests the favorites were *so* heavily favored that the market barely wavered on them.
One observation: Strategy #1's outsized return ($24.14 vs. the others' $5–$14) came from fewer trades but aggressive short timeframes. This might indicate that by hour 6, the outcome was already determined, and staying in longer just diluted returns. Or it could be pure variance on 89 trades. Hard to say without more weeks of data.
Here's what we're curious about: Will this trend hold? Heavy favorites have a tendency to stop being heavy favorites once traders see them working. Do we expect the same price bands to stay liquid and profitable, or will the market reprrice as people start chasing these strategies? We'll find out.
