The Favorite's Game: Why Short-Window Weather Bets Dominated This Week

Week of July 13–20, 2026

Remember when prediction markets felt unpredictable? This week on Kalshi told a different story. The data is loud and clear: if you stuck to heavy favorites in weather markets with tight time windows, you basically printed money. We're talking near-perfect win rates, zero drawdown, and returns that make you wonder why anyone trades anything else.

Spoiler alert: there's probably a reason.

The Winner's Circle

All five strategies we backtested this week were profitable. Not "mostly profitable." Not "profitable on average." All five. That's the kind of unanimity that should make your spidey-senses tingle.

Best Performer
+24.14%
88-92¢ YES, ≤6h
Trades (Winner)
89
Lightning-fast exits
Max Drawdown (All)
0%
Completely smooth sailing
Best Win Rate
96.8%
92-96¢ YES, ≤24h

Pattern Alert: The fastest strategy (≤6h) posted the highest returns but fewest trades. The longer time windows pulled in more volume but less juice per bet. It's the classic speed-versus-scale tradeoff, and this week, speed won.

The Real Story: Why Weather Won

Here's what actually happened. Weather markets are inherently more predictable than, say, political outcomes or crypto movements. The forecast data is public, updated frequently, and if you're buying a weather YES at 88-92¢, the market has already priced in that this thing is probably going to happen. You're not making a call—you're collecting a small fee from people who either disagree or need to hedge.

The tighter the time window (≤6h), the more certain the outcome becomes. Markets converge. Inefficiencies vanish. And if you're sitting at 88¢ on a contract that's 95% likely to resolve YES, the math is simple: you win more often than you lose, and you win faster.

Zero drawdown across the board suggests this week had no surprise volatility swings in these markets. Weather predictions didn't flip. Favorite weather outcomes kept winning. The market stayed rational. Boring? Maybe. Profitable? Absolutely.

The Volume Story

Notice that the 48-hour window strategy pulled 245 trades while the 6-hour version only managed 89. More time = more opportunities to enter, but also more price movement and wider bid-ask spreads. The 6-hour strategy's superior returns suggest that speed and conviction beat volume in this particular market environment.

Trades: 48h Window
245
88-92¢ strategy
Trades: 24h Window
243-249
Best middle ground
Trades: 6h Window
89
High conviction, lower volume

The Mild Outlier

The 88-92¢ YES strategy with a 48-hour window returned the least (+5.03%), even though it still posted a 93.1% win rate. Why? Probably bid-ask friction and the slightly longer window introducing more noise. The other variants—whether tighter time frames or tighter price bands—all returned 7-24% ranges, suggesting the 48h/88-92¢ combo was the only one working inefficiently.

What We're Actually Looking At

Important: These are simulated results from backtesting against real Kalshi data from July 13–20. This is not actual trading performance, and past results—even when backtested against real markets—don't guarantee future returns. Weather markets can shift, bid-ask spreads can widen, and liquidity can dry up. Take these numbers as "what if you had done this?" not "you should definitely do this."

Perspective check: A 24% weekly return sounds incredible until you remember you're trading at 88-92¢ on something with 88-92% implied probability. The math works, but only because the market is already 90% certain of the outcome. You're not predicting—you're betting on the obvious.

What's Next?

The big question for next week: will weather markets remain this predictable and frictionless? Summer weather patterns tend to be more stable than spring or fall, so we might see similar patterns continue. But if volatility creeps in or liquidity dries up, these returns evaporate fast.

Watch for: whether the bid-ask spread widens as more traders discover these patterns, and whether longer-dated contracts (7+ days out) show similar efficiency.
